I’m currently crewing on a sailboat sailing the South Pacific from French Polynesia to Fiji while stopping in a couple of places along the way. I’ve been waiting for just such a time and backdrop to record and release this video of my song “Freedom’s Call.” Crewing on this boat and two others earlier in the year have been one of the ways that I’ve been learning more about sailing/boats and to better understand what a new life in that realm might look like.
We recently sailed into the island kingdom of Tonga where I shot this this recording of “Freedom’s Call”while at anchor as the sun had just set. When the sun sets in a harbor with many boats, there can be a bit of a flurry of activity with dinghies coming and going to/from shore. I managed to squeeze this recording in on a single take while luckily avoiding too many of the locally errant sounds.
This song’s birth began as many do with just some noodling on my guitar while traveling in my van. That noodling quickly turned into the primary fingerpicking and chord structure for the verses found in this song. Gradually over those summer months (2021), the lyrics, refrain, and song structure took form. The song reflects the growing call in me toward this burgeoning dream I’ve had of sailing the world, infused with a growing questioning of modern society with which I have become increasingly less enamored.
